THE NATIONAL ANTIQUES & DECORATIVE ARTS FAIRE - AT THE SANDTON CONVENTION CENTRE FROM THE 24 -26 JULY 2009 FOCUSES ON THE VALUE OF INVESTING IN ANTIQUES AND COLLECTABLES
In our volatile economy, 2009 is set to be a slow and conservative year rather than an aggressive one with a global move towards traditions and values. It is this return to appreciating basic values and conservative traditions that will spell a renewed interest in antiques and collectables. When times are good, consumers with ready cash go for the latest fads, not too concerned with long-term returns. But with the tide changing, collecting has become a viable alternative to volatile markets and there is a return to appreciating the traditions, workmanship and stability of our global heritage. Even Barack Obama, at his inauguration, chose to use Abraham Lincoln’s antique Bible in his swearing in ceremony!
The National Antiques & Decorative Arts Faire, which takes place from the 24 – 26th July 2009 at the Sandton Convention Centre will attract investors who are looking for safer havens of investing. The performance of the art, antique & collectable markets have, over the past decades, always brought better than average returns and, according to the experts, there will be a definite increase in these investments as the volatility of other markets surges. The intrinsic value of a Georgian armoire, a silver Irish tea set, rare coins or a signed Lalique vase will offer, not only immense visual and tactile pleasure, but will be an asset that can only grow in value.
Exhibitors from all over the country and internationally will once again showcase their collection of antiques and collectables. Furniture takes pride of place with top dealers exhibiting a wide range of Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian and Art Nouveau furniture. Specialist dealers in silver will be selling Cape, Russian, Irish and English silver - from canteens of cutlery to the more collectable novelty silver. The full spectrum of porcelain and China will be on show as well as a wide range of glassware, jewellery and general collectables. For the gentlemen collectors there will be exhibitors dealing in books, prints, maps, coins, medals and military memorabilia.
The Faire attracts international exhibitors amongst them Ricus Dullaert, a respected furniture dealer from Amsterdam who be showcasing his selection of Dutch furniture, brass, pewter and icons. South African art and coin dealer John Keogh, who has built up an international reputation whilst living in the USA will be showcasing some rare coins and international works of art and many of our local dealers will be scouring the world to bring back rare and beautiful pieces of furniture. Ed Pascoe, of Pascoe and Company in the US will once again be exhibiting his collectable range of porcelain.
With an overall theme of ‘Living with Antiques’ the Antiques & Decorative Arts Faire will once again feature the work of interior decorator Stephen Falcke who shows visitors the art of mixing old and new pieces to create a harmonious blend of eclectic living.
Whether you’re looking at visiting the Antiques & Decorative Arts Fair to find that unique investment piece, are a collecting aficionado who wants to add to your collection – be it of books, coins or porcelain figures or want to find out how to incorporate beautiful old pieces into today’s décor and lifestyle then the Antiques Faire is not to be missed.
