Trek Furniture

a selection of Transvaal trek chairs and a pine trek table, 19th century. The early pioneers had a nomadic life style and portability of furniture was a necessity. Bone inlay work and carving display the pioneer's need to decorate and his inherent sense

Painted Kist

a Transvaal painted kist, probably Potchefstroom, c. 1900. Wagon making was one of the main occupations of the pioneers after having settled in the North.

Bench

a Transvaal hardwood child's bench. mid 19th century. This delightful little bench is made from a variety of indigenous hardwoods and is decorated with the so called 'tree of life' motive, a beloved folk art motive of the pioneers.

Bakkis

a Cape cedarwood bakkis from the West coast, 19th century. A dough chest was an indispencable utensil in the Cape kitchen. West coast furniture has an unique character, often compared with American Shaker furniture.
